My husband and I bought a house last Oct and one of the things we loved was the way the previous owners kept the yard. There were lots of beautiful flowering bushes and plants. One in particular was on the side of our driveway. It was tall green stalks with pretty little purple flowers at the top. I thought it was lavendar and read that you should not cut lavendar back. Now the stalks are dead…very dead and there are little green sprouts growing up from the ground. We are not sure what it is and need to know if we should pull the dead stalks out? Please help! I am a novice at this and you are my only hope. I attached pictures of how it looks today and can’t find any of when it was flourishing. Hope you can help. Thanks!! Kim Cordum

Hard to tell from the pictures…Mexican Petunia perhaps? If so, they reseed themselves and come up again.

Maybe they were Phlox. Try googling images for them. In the fall in winter they plant dries and leaves the brittle stalk. The ones in my yard look somewhat like the ones in your picture.

Thanks Carol! Just googled garantica salvia and that’s exactly what it is. I thought it might be a lavender bush but it smelled like a spice or seasoning to me so lavender was out…and once I saw the picture of salvia I knew that’s what it was. Appreciate all of your responses!!

You’re lucky to have a good stand of salvia guaranitica! It’s a wonderful wild flower, and blooms beautifully in sun or shade (great deep intense blue flower). Enjoy.
