Notes:

I have a large spreading habit tree which is approximately 85′ tall. The leaves are among the last to come on in the spring and they are glossy, smooth and pointed at the tip. I was trying to figure out what kind of tree it was and all of the leaf identification sites pointed me to poison sumac. I surely hope not as this is one big tree with a lot of low branches. I have brushed against the branches many times without consequence and even hung an owl house on it. Is it poison sumac?

Yes, Looks like Blackgum to me. Tried to split for firewood one time. Impossible to split by hand as the fibers cling tenaciously so must be a very strong hardwood.
