Notes:

This plant has totally taken over my back yard. It grows into a 4 or 5 foot bush. What is it and how do I get rid of it?

I agree with Sally. As you’re in Atlanta, visit Fernbank Forest in Decatur to see how it can take over a forest understory. (At least it had years ago.)

Mahonia is very invasive, will spread through woodlands shading out desirable plants. Cut at base & spray stub with straight Roundup. If you must have them, top it out, let it bloom, enjoy seeing purple fruit unti1 they mature, then cut and bag fruit and dispose in garbage. Slows the spreading.

Looks like Grape Mahonia. It is considered an ornamental and should behave very well in shaded areas. Unwanted seedlings can be hand pulled easily. As I recall an established shrub can be removed with a shovel if it is unwanted.
