I live in Roswell, GA and there is a beautiful purplish flowering bush that is just everywhere these days. It reminds me of the azalea family but I do not believe it is an azalea. What is it?

  1. Lyle Unregistered says:

This is a Purple Loropetalum (Loropetalum chinense var. rubrum). It is an evergreen shrub that, with most varieties, has great purple foliage. In spring, it has the bright pink blooms that you see in the photo. There are many varieties now available, so it would be difficult to ID the exact one you have.

I think Lyle is correct and it’s common name is Chinese Fringe Flower.

I’ve read that it’s a cousin to our native witch hazel…I can see the resemblance in the blooms.

Chinese Fringe LORAPETALUM. They are beautiful and grow rather quickly!
