Notes:
About a week ago I noticed the leaves being stripped to the ribs. This is spreading quickly on this tree. I see no webs and only a few caterpillars, not enough for this amount of damage. I can here small pellets, grains dropping. It sounds like a light rain. The damage is happening so fast that I am concerned about the long term health of this tree

Lot’s of caterpillars this year eating up the trees. In most cases they don’t hurt anything. Your problem might be this one. http://www.walterreeves.com/gardening-q-and-a/river-birch-sawfly/
