Notes:
My brother planted this from a seed and has kept it going for 8+ years. He was so proud of it! He was away on a work trip and the girl housesitting for him forgot to water it for 6 weeks. Is there any possible way to revive it’s little soul?! What if I were to cut it all the way back? The leaves still have a little color, but clearly they’re dead. I’ve been keeping it wet just in case. Please advise. Worst case scenario… what kind of plant is this anyway? I will try to find a new one. 🙁

Sad indeed! Is the bark still green and healthy looking? You can gently scraping the bark to see if any healthy tissue under there before you make any cut. You should also let the plant dry out in between watering. It is possible to revive a dried up plant than a drowned rotten one. I am only guessing here, this might be spotted laurel, gold dust plant (Aucuba japonica). This plant is very drought tolerant. Hope this is your brother beloved plant, good luck to you both.
