I took this photo today on my patio. I wanted to know if this is the stink bug that I hear about on the radio that is new to the area.

    It’s a stink bug, I don’t believe it’s a kudzu bug.

It looks like it may be the Brown marmorated stink bug which is in the news. Type in Brown marmorated stink bug in Google and look at the photo in Wikipedia. There is a nice enlargement of the bug. See what you think. Your photo is a little washed out, but I think the two match.

That definitely looks like a stink bug. They are very active in the fall months looking for an escape from the winter cold and then just going in to dormancy; though you do occasionally see them during warmer temperatures. When they find a way to get in to your house, you will periodically see them throughout the winter. We are getting a patent on an eco-friendly device that helps with the capture and easy disposal of them. We have several around the house for each area where these bugs tend to collect … then also at the doors beginning around the month of September. We have shared the device with people who love it as much as we do. Hope you do not get as badly infested as we have been. **Trying to get the product and website out by June.
