Notes:

Walter,
We have lived here for 10 years and have several of these growing in our back yard, but have never known the name of them. Thanks for your assistance in solving this mystery.
Thanks,
Ron S

This is a Mahonia. Birds love the fruit and will scatter the plant around for you. Look under other shrubbery for seedlings.

this looks to me like it is the Mahonia japonica—Leatherleaf Mahonia.

I’m a student at Gwinnett Technical College.

Oregon Grape Holly, Mahonia aquifolium. I like this bush a lot but it is somewhat invasive. Seems to tolerate a variety of conditions; the bushes I planted (and years later ripped out were in fairly full sun albeit not blazing) but most of the ‘volunteers’ are in light shade on my property.

I also love this plant.I have them lining my north facing front porch, and my cat birds and mocking birds practically live there when the berries come. They make great nesting areas for them too.
