Please help me identify this strange “weed” that is growing around my purple coneflowers. It started small, but is becoming larger and more invasive. I’ve had a difficult time finding roots for it to rip it out completely. Thanks!

It looks like Dodder, a nasty thing resembling Silly String, but with the habit of something out of a science fiction movie, since it’s a parasite. http://www.walterreeves.com/gardening-q-and-a/dodder-vines/

Field dodder. Because it is a parisitic annual weed it will always be photographed growing on the host plant. http://plants.usda.gov/java/profile?symbol=CUPE3&photoID=cupe3_004_ahp.jpg
