I dug up a patch of dirt from my mom’s ‘rock’ garden and a few things came up this spring. Some I expected but this cluster of tall wispy plants is not familiar to me. They have grown to about 7 feet tall and are starting to turn brownish especially near the top. Is this a weed or?

Looks like a mighty happy weed to me. One we call dog fennel in these parts of Georgia. Check out this link. http://plants.usda.gov/java/largeImage?imageID=euca5_006_avp.tif

Looks a lot like what we called bitterweed when I was a kid living on a farm. If the cows ate it, the milk tasted bitter for several days. It has a very distinctive odor.

From the side it resembles mature Dog Fennel (Eupatorium capillifolium)

Thanks for the comments and link! From what I’ve now looked up from the comments above, it does look very much like Dog Fennel (Eupatorium capillifolium). Apparently there are other ‘dog fennel’ plants that have flowers and are not this one. It makes sense now since this weed is often in pastures like those next to my mom’s house and it puts out tens of thousands of seeds that can last for years! It is now in my yard waste for pick up tomorrow!
