Notes:

What on earth is this? It smells like a cross between rancid trash and death. I noticed it while putting Christmas lights out…nothing to kill the Christmas spirit than the smell of this nasty thing. Bla!

it is a stinkhorn fungi and as the name implies it really stinks and can be smelled from some distance. My understanding is that once it opens it secretes a sticky substance that attracts blow flies which in turn distribute the pollen so that more of the fungi will be found. I had some in my yard and found that RoundUP did the best job in eliminating but will be something that needs to be done for some time due to the generous flies. Just spray the fungi and the area around. Good luck!
