Notes:

These unwanted plants have shown up in many places on my property, wide spreading roots, but normally a series of single, very straight stalks with thorns, and as you can see sets of jagged edge leaves. Wondering what they are and the best way to get rid of them without harming crepe myrtles and other desirable foliage. Thanks.

Blackberries are produced on second-year canes.

Thanks, confirms what one friend already said. But in the last year or two, never seen any berries.

Blackberry. Buy some good gloves or make jelly. Well, considering you have to pick them, buy the gloves even if you make jelly. Check this link for more than you ever wanted to know about blackberries: http://www.ipm.ucdavis.edu/PMG/PESTNOTES/pn7434.html
