Tree that grows around creeks

Notes:

I’ve never been able to find this tree in any of my tree I.D. books. So it’s occurred to me that it may be a shrub that grows into a small tree. It’s twigs are zig zag as you can see. It grows in low lying areas around creeks near Kennesaw Mountain.
