Notes:
This plant just showed up in my yard (uninvited), but it is pretty. I need to know what it is, and how it got there. There seem to be others starting up in other parts of my yard.

Yes an Ajuga, common name of Bugle Weed. Has a pretty blue to purple spike of bloom. Can be quite invasive and spread if not kept in check. Pretty easy to pull out but you really have to stay on top of it.

Looks to be Ajuga reptans. If in spring it develops a flower head resembling one of these ( http://www.botanicalstockphotos.com/photos-ajuga-107.htm ), you’ll know for sure.
