Notes:

I’ve got a couple guesses, but please help me identify this tree found on our property when we moved in. The leaves I saw last fall were oblong, up to 7 or 8 inches long. The tree was cut back by a previous owner, it looks in a photo from a couple years ago to have been 10-12 feet high, with multiple trunks branching off.

You have one of the beautiful Japanese Magnolias. It will grow quite tall if left alone. One of the most beautiful is at Pres. Jefferson’s home in Virginia. It was blooming in March in 1966 (On our honeymoon).

Yes, it is a Japanese Magnolia. Beacon St. in Boston is astonishing when they are in bloom. I think this is blooming really early, even for Georgia. My daffodils are up now too, they usually wait until the end of February thru March.

Thanks, John & Holly- I looked up the Japanese Magnolia and that’s definitely what we have. Alas, a hard freeze about a week ago froze those early blooms into wilted brown lumps. I deadheaded those and we’ll see what happens when spring really gets here!
