What is the weed and how do I get it out of my yard?

The attached pictures show a weed that is taking over my backyard. I have tried a couple “lawn weed kill” applications to no avail. In my beds, I can kill it with RoundUp, but ideally I don’t want to use RoundUp on my grass.

Any thoughts or hints?

Pull or use Roundup in bedding areas. In your lawn areas any product labeled for control of crabgrass will be helpful. If you kill the weeds will you have anything left? Regular short mowing may be your best solution this growing season. In shaded low lying areas you may need to reseed this fall. First frost will kill the annual jewgrass. Be sure to apply preEmergents in 2012. Make two applications. One in mid February and one in late March.
