This plant just showed up uninvited to my front plant bed. Note on the this year photo what looks like a small trunk. Well the this year photo is similar to last years shot of this plant. Woo-Wee take a look at the last year photo to see what this little plant has become. Before I decide to rip this guy out before it gets toooooo tall, I would like to know what it is. Any answers??

I would guess royal empress since it often occurs as a weed tree. From the leaf shape other possibilities are basswood, cottonwood, or catalpa. Either way it is too near the house to allow to grow to maturity. You could always transplant it if you want to let it grow.

    Hi Walter,
Over the past years, I have had quite a few volunteers of this species of weeds(?)in my flower beds. As a Realtor, I have the pleasure of visiting many lakeside lawns, and often see this type of plant springing up in flowerbeds as a volunteer. It is native to our area. Didn’t realize you had written a book-I will have to pick up a copy.
