A friend of mine is trying to figure out what this “weed” is growing outside of her house. From what she’s told me, it’s growing very quickly (up to 8 inches a day), has narrow, variegated leaves, and resembles bamboo, but doesn’t have a segmented stalk like bamboo has. Any ideas?

I suspect that it is indeed bamboo, and that the joints will be visible as soon as the outer layer falls off.
