    Maybe a species of willow (Salix) with a type of galls called ‘willow pine cone gall’. According to source some of the willow species with similar leaves shape grown in MI are: S.amygdaloides, S. cinerea, S. atrocinerea, S. discolor, S. eriocephala, S. pentandra, etc…Best wishes! http://www.friendsofthewildflowergarden.org/pages/photosubpages/willowpinegall.html
