This tree is shaped much like a Christmas tree and doesn’t get it’s leaves until long after the oaks, etc. around it. It has a reddish tint on the back side of the leaves. Someone said it might be a “tulip oak”. What do you think it is?

  1. Chops Unregistered says:

That looks like a Southern Red Oak. Immature oaks in general can leaf out quite late with larger that typical sized leaves than average later on. Southern Red oak immature leaves can look very different from the mature form resembling Bigfoot’s footprint at first and blending into a giant turkey foot as the tree matures. This looks as if its inbetween stages.

Is the branch shown a sucker from a stump? I’ve noticed that can obsure the leaf shape for indentification by leaves alone.
