The Spring Webinar is coming!

The fall gardening webinar was such a success that we're planning to do it again! Because you are a faithful newsletter subscriber, you get first chance to register. The date is March 22, 11:00 a.m. to Noon. The topic is "Help Your Landscape Recover From the Drought". Sponsored by our friends at Encore Azalea.

Click here for details and registration information.

Come See Me!

I'll be speaking at the Barnes and Noble in Buckhead on Feb. 28 at Sun City Peachtree on Mar. 1 and at the Fayette County Library on Mar. 8. Bring your hardest garden questions!

Garden Knowledge:

My friend Dave Funderburk recently emailed me to gently correct my pronunciation of "dioecious". I enunciated all five syllables....but Dave pointed out that "ioe" is a dipthong and that the word "dioecious" correctly has only three syllables. Do you wonder how to pronounce "peony" and "liriope" correctly? Click here if you think a dipthong is a type of underwear...and if you would like to learn about other garden words.

Garden Calendar:

Look for blooms on your Lenten rose (Helleborus orientalis). Few other plants can supply the year-round interest of this evergreen groundcover.

Be sure to listen to Highway Horticulture on The Lawn and Garden Show on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. Theresa Schrum and I will discuss her latest observations of the natural world.

Design Tip:

Butterfly Gardens
It's not too early to begin planning a butterfly garden. There are dozens of drought-tolerant, heat-loving annuals, perennials and shrubs that are attractive to butterflies. Start with researching what butterflies need throughout their entire life cycle from egg to mature adult. It's more than a garden full of butterfly bushes. Learn More

Cool Plant

Purple Pixie Loropetalum (Loropetalum chinensis 'Shang-lo')
Evergreen shrub native to China. I'm really excited about one of the newest Loropetalums to hit the plant market. Purple Pixie Loropetalum is a weeping dwarf variety that only grows 1-2 feet tall. With deep purple foliage and fuchsia flowers, it makes a great year round shrub. Learn More

Q: This tree was on our lot when we built the house. In winter it has a lot of berries. Any idea what it might be? Jenny H.
