Garden
Knowledge:
My friend Dave Funderburk recently emailed me to gently correct my
pronunciation of "dioecious". I enunciated all five syllables....but
Dave pointed out that "ioe" is a dipthong and that the word "dioecious"
correctly has only three syllables. Do you wonder how to pronounce
"peony" and "liriope" correctly?
Click here if you think a dipthong is a type of underwear...and if
you would like to learn
about other garden words. |

Garden Calendar:
Look for blooms on your
Lenten rose (Helleborus orientalis). Few other plants can supply
the year-round interest of this evergreen groundcover.

Tip:
Butterfly Gardens
It's not too early to
begin planning a butterfly garden. There are dozens of
drought-tolerant, heat-loving annuals, perennials and shrubs that are
attractive to butterflies. Start with researching what butterflies need
throughout their entire life cycle from egg to mature adult. It's more
than a garden full of butterfly bushes.

Cool Plant
Purple Pixie Loropetalum (Loropetalum chinensis
'Shang-lo')
Evergreen shrub native
to China. I'm really excited about one of the newest Loropetalums to
hit the plant market. Purple Pixie Loropetalum is a weeping dwarf
variety that only grows 1-2 feet tall. With deep purple foliage and
fuchsia flowers, it makes a great year round shrub.

Reader Questions:
Q: I have
two camellias that were planted last May. They got brown spots on the
leaves and now the spots are turning white. Do you know what's wrong
with them? Diane D.
Q: This tree
was on our lot when we built the house. In winter it has a lot of
berries. Any idea what it might be? Jenny H.
Q: I can't seem
to identify this weed and its properties. I have it in centipedegrass
even though I put down fall and spring pre-emergent. How do I go about
treating it? Janet G.
