Tropical
gardens are really quite popular. Most people think of exotics such as
bananas and orchids when considering a tropical look. However, we have
quite a few native plants that will be completely hardy year round yet
look as though the came from a South American rain forest.

Cardinal Flower
(Lobelia cardinalis)
Perennial
native to most of the U.S. This is one of my favorite late summer
blooming flowers. The stalks of scarlet red flowers that extend as much
as 4 feet above the foliage are hard to miss when blooming in low
ditches or at the edge of lakes and ponds. Attracts hummingbirds.
