Fertilizing – Drought

Q: Should we skip fertilizing our lawn this year since we are likely to continue our drought conditions?

A: Don’t skip the lawn feeding. I am certain that rain will come this spring. All you have to do is time your applications appropriately. Fescue lawns should be fed now, and again in mid-April. Fertilize all other lawn grasses when soil temperatures are 60 – 65 degrees. A practical way to measure soil heat is to sit on your grass for a while. If you can sit comfortably for ten to fifteen minutes, the soil is warm enough and roots are growing fast enough for you to apply fertilizer.
