Jade Plant – Roots on Stem

Q: I have a Jade plant that I received as a gift. It seems to be very healthy with a lot of new growth, but there are some white growths coming out of the side of the plant stems. I don’t know what these fingery things are, do you?

A: The fingery things are adventitious roots! They are a common phenomenon on many plants, including willow trees and muscadine vines. Many other succulent plants form small roots at the node – where a leaf joins the stem.

They are not a bad thing for your jade plant, just interesting.

You can propagate some new jade plants by clipping off the stem just below the roots and planting the lower stem and roots in potting soil.
