Pregnant Onion – Care
Q: My pregnant onion is having babies and I’m not sure how to take care of them.
A: Pregnant onion, Ornithogalum caudatum or Ornithogalum longibracteatum, is a fascinating houseplant.
The swollen bulb sends forth long green leaves and tall flower stems each year. Small offshoots (bulbils) form under the skin on the bulb of a mature plant. Each one can be carefully snapped off and planted to form a new plant. Don’t remove one until it has fully emerged from the side of the mother bulb.
As you’ve learned from caring for the original, pregnant onion likes to be watered regularly, although it can stand being dry for a couple of days. Fertilize every two months and you’ll have enough offspring to outfit a maternity ward!
