Dragonfly emerging from nymphal shell

Q: Not sure what I am seeing in this photo I took in Blairsville GA on shore of Lake Nottely . I believe it is a dragonfly recently emerged from its larva stage. Am I correct?

A: You are exactly right!

Dragonfly nymphs are not very attractive. Some might call them ugly. They live in shallow mud and when you spot one crawling in the grime, it doesn’t look like it could ever become a beautiful insect.

But change it does…radically. And you have captured the transformation!
