Annabelle Hydrangea – Mixed Up With Lacecap
Q: I’ve had Annabelle Hydrangeas for three years around our home. My wife took a picture of the prettiest but kookiest blooms amongst the usual beautiful white globes that we’ve enjoyed since they were planted.
It looks like it tried to form the typical globe but instead flat bloom with small blue flowers in the middle and a few larger white petals around the edges.
What’s up with that?
A: The “kooky” hydrangea isn’t an ‘Annabelle’….it’s a regular hydrangea, aka Hydrangea macrophylla, that has a lacecap flower.
Note the difference in leaf shapes of the two plants.
I don’t know how the lacecap got planted there with the ‘Annabelle’, Hydrangea arborescens.
