Henbit, Deadnettle – Identification and Control

Q: I thought this was henbit but the leaves are furry purple/magenta besides being green. Do you know what this sort of invasive plant is?

A: It’s purple deadnettle, which has a similar appearance to henbit. Both broadleafed weeds sprout in October and become rampant in early spring.

The best treatment in winter and spring is to dig it or spot-spray with a broadleaf weed killer (click for examples).

You could also apply imazaquin (click for examples) but be sure to read and follow the label directions.

Next September, apply a pre-emergent (click for examples) that specifically lists henbit or deadnettle on the label.
