Jade Plant – Blooming

Q: I was listening to your radio show and you said that a jade plant seldom flowers. Mine flowers every fall and lasts thru the winter. This plant is well over 20 years old and grows in a very big pot.

A jade plant is not the easiest to grow. Most people over- water it. Having the right soil mixture make a huge difference in the survival of the plant. It needs very good drainage.

A: Wow – what a show! It’s typical for tropical plants to delay flowering until they are mature, well-established and slightly root-bound. It’d uncommon, but not unheard of, for dracena and snake plant to bloom as well.

Your blooming jade plant should make you proud! It shows that you have correctly cared for it for all these years.

And I agree with you – this South African native requires very good soil drainage!
