New Sapling – Trunk Split

Q: I have a newly planted live oak sapling which was split by a heavy storm last night. What can I do to mend the trunk?

A: You are not going to like my answer. It is almost impossible for the split to graft or mend back together. As your tree grows bigger and no matter how you try to hold it together, the split will get bigger.

You’d be better off to replace the tree. Examine the new one to make sure you don’t have any limbs that divide from each other at such an acute angle, which always leads to trunk failure.
