Pecan – Grafting (Topworking)
Q: My wife planted two pecan seeds that her sister gave her in 2000. The trees are now 12 and 18 feet tall.
She has now heard that since they are not grafted that no pecans will not grow on them. The trunks are pretty big now.
Do you suggest they we cut them down and plant grafted trees or leave them for shade .
A: They may…or may not…have good pecans on them……it all depends on the genetics of the nuts you planted
You could wait until they start producing nuts and make a judgment then.
If the nuts are small, consider learning how to graft pecan buds onto selected limbs. After a few years of “top working” you’ll have the grafted pecan you want.
