Tips for Zoysia Success

green-up spring

Q: I have been trying to get zoysia to grow in my backyard area for two years now. There are a lot of prickly grasses, some bermuda and fescue, and a lot of weeds too. Can I weed and feed now? If so, which one will help the zoysia?

A: The most important factor for success with any grass is to match the plant to the environment. If you have weeds in your zoysia, you have a mismatch. Zoysia will choke out most weeds if it is growing strongly. It’s a bit too early to apply weed and feed; in fact it may hurt the zoysia which should not be fed until it’s almost totally green. Zoysia needs full sun most of the day. If you don’t have that, no weed and feed program will help.
