Growing next to a burn pile where I removed lots of weeds from my ditch. Tons of thorns, very stiff stem.

Horse nettle. They don’t particularly like to eat briars, even if they otherwise would like it. (Although related to tomatoes and other edibles, it’s poisonous to us.)
