I have huge areas of these on my West GA ranch growing in the river bottoms. At first I thought they were some kind of Cherry, but curious to what they actually are.

Maybe a species of hazel (Corylus)? Check out Beak hazelnut (Corylus cornuta), and American hazelnut (Corylus americana) and see if you have a match.
