Cleyera – Leaf Spot

Q: I have some shrubs in front of my house that I keep pruned to about 5 feet tall. They’re 12-14 years old and have always looked great, but this year they have some kind of spot or disease.

A: You have a couple of cleyera shrubs and they have leaf spot plus a good bit of pruning damage.

Honestly, they are the wrong choice for the spot. They get so big that you have to prune them constantly. The new growth that results is very susceptible to disease. You should consider other shrubs to take their place.

If you’d rather not dispense with them, spray new growth every spring at two week intervals with a garden fungicide (click for sources).
