Horseradish – Growing

Q: I bought a horseradish root from the grocery and placed it in a jar of water. I got sprouts! How do I separate the sprouts to give me multiple plants?

A: I’d carefully slice down the middle to make two plants that both have a large piece of root attached. Plant them three feet apart in a spot that gets lots of direct morning sun but afternoon shade. The coarse leaves will multiply as summer progresses.

In fall, dig roots from the sides of each clump and freeze in an airtight bag for later use. After a year, you can dig roots anytime to use as needed. Keep in mind that horseradish spreads like a weed. You may eventually have more than you can possibly use.
