How DeKalb County Compost is Made

DeKalb County is one of the few counties that collects yard waste, composts it, and returns it to citizens for their use. I recently toured the composting facility to see how it operates.

Free DeKalb County Compost

yard waste arrives in big trailers

the material is piled into long windrows while waiting to be ground up

a loader puts it into the top of a huge tub grinder

a big truck transports the ground up material to long piles

it’s stored in the piles for 6 – 8 months. The internal temperature of the pile is
taken each week. When the pile cools down it is turned, to put surface material
into the center causing everything to be composted.

after several months the yard waste is almost completely broken down

piles of compost are available for DeKalb citizens at three locations
