Notes:
These shrubs have a strong smell when trimmed. What are these and how do I trim and maintain. Full at the top and very thin at the base. Is this the norm?

Those shrubs look like Upright Yew, Taxus x media. Some varities can grow up to 10 feet high or more. It can handle regular pruning to maintain it’s size. Pruning can cause defoliation but it can handle a regeneration pruning; however, it will grow back slowly.
