I saw this on Cold Mountain in Shining Rock Wilderness. It was growing near a gap just down from the peak.

If it is on a bush, it might be huckleberries. Good to eat but an acquired taste.

My first reaction to the berries was “dewberry” – assuming a real closeup shot – but the leaves don’t match that. But I also see no leaves resembling a grape leaf, and the fox grape clusters I’ve seen are not rounded like that, but tapered at the end like wine and grocery grapes.
