Euonymus – American

Q: Do you have any idea what this is?

A: It’s American euonymus, Euonymus americanus….commonly called “Hearts-a-Busting”. You can tell it’s a euonymus because it has green stems (rather than brown ones) coming from the main trunk.

The seed pods you noticed appear in September each year. Birds love the seed and scatter them throughout the woods.

I’ve never seen it for sale at a garden center…only at Georgia Native Plant Society plant sales. You can try planting the seed but it may take two years before seedlings emerge.
