Notes:
I’m struggling to identify this tree in the garden. The leaves look a bit like Bay leaves. It has very small white flowers but only a few and they’re hard to see. It’s always done well but some lower branches seem to be dying with leaves turning brown and falling off. Can’t see any bugs or infections on the leaves. Need to identify so that I know how to deal with lower branches dying.

Without its flowers, I’m speculating only. The leaf looks similar to those in the Chimonanthus genus. You stated that yours is an evergreen plant, this might be Chimonanthus nitens species. Again I’m only guessinng here. When it blooms, if you don’t know it by then, please re post with photo of the flowers. Thank you and best wishes! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chimonanthus_nitens
