I should know what this is because my grandmother used to have these in her yard and they are quite common, but I’ve long since forgotten what they are. They are very fragrant

Yes it is ligustrum. I had several people comment when I posted this to Facebook also and one of my friends from back home in Louisiana actually drove by my grandmother’s old house and confirmed that they are indeed ligustrum

Looks more like ligustrum, whether common privet with small more fuzzy leaves or the more common waxleaf with large heavy leaves.
