someone gave me a small piece of this, I have forgotten who and what it is, but its spreading out and I am not sure what to do with it, it doesn’t seem to be growing up as much as out .

It’s hard to tell with out flowers. I could only speculating that this is either the evergreen winter creeper (Euonymus fortunei) or a cultivar in the Forsythia genus. I’m leaning toward Forsythia, it looses the leaves in the winter (deciduous). Check out the included link below for more information of Forsythia, click on images to enlarge.
