Further searching the goldenrod photos led me to a photo of Horseweed, Erigeron canadensis (formerly Conyza canadensis). This might be the very one!

Thank you, this looks very much like my plant. Unfortunately I had to pull it up (still no buds visible) about 3 weeks ago before it had a chance to bloom — it was choking out the rose bush! I suspect then it might be a late autumn bloomer? If I see another one, I’ll have more patience! 🙂

The foliage looks like goldenrond that is in our area. If so, you would likely see yellow flowers by now.
