Notes:
I am stumped as are some other friends – and even the people at the NC Cradle of Forestry! I am actually from SC and see this acorn on hikes in the SC/NC mountains. What tree is it from?

I’m neither a botanist or an expert and I’m only speculating here, perhaps it’s a fruit from the soapberry/soap nut tree genus (Sapindus)? The fruit of soap nut contains from 1-3 seeds. Check out link below for Sapindus fruits images with cup (cupule). According to sources, the S. marginatus grows in NC. Best wishes! https://www.google.com/search?q=Sapindus+marginatus+with+fruits&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwieqp6M54XSAhXIYyYKHZSqB6IQ7AkIKg&biw=1879&bih=909#imgdii=stqGZb-ePie0BM:&imgrc=hNW4a3_-A4pByM:
