Notes:

I am wondering what this is, besides “the weed I love to hate the most” – and how to get rid of it. I have been spraying with Round up in open areas, and it seems to be working but always pops back up. Here it is shown woven into my Nandina and I don’t really want to spray there.

You can cut the stem off near the ground and “paint” the cut stem face with straight, undiluted Roundup with a small brush. Don’t use pre-mixed Roundup, use the stuff you have to mix in a sprayer, but use it without mixing it with water.

The only way to get rid of “Smilax” is to dig up the root completely. Roots can be several feet or more in length. Roundup will kill the foliage but the root always survives.

It is greenbrier ( many in genus smilax) don’t know which particular one. Put gloves on & grab close to ground & pull it up. Do it again when it comes back.
