My mom and her daycare kids discovered this mysterious thing growing on the trunk of a plum tree in her back yard. We are all curious as to what this thing is. Any help would be appreciated!

I believe it’s a fungus, probably a sulfur shelf (Laetiporus gilbertsonii)
