Leopard Moth – Identification

Q: I found this bug on the side of the road and wondered what it is. I have never seen one like this before – black and white and such geometric markings. Is it a butterfly or moth?

A: It’s a giant leopard moth, Ecpantheria scribonia.

The larval form is one of wooly bear caterpillars we see in late summer.
