Tea Camellia

Q: I am working with a client who lives in Stone Mountain (very close to the mountain itself) who wants to know the uses of her property since the 1821 land lottery. She has been told that her land was once a tea plantation. I can find no record of tea growing in DeKalb County. I don’t even know if it’s possible. What do you think?

A: Camellia sinensis (the tea camellia) certainly grows here, I have one in my back yard. So I guess it’s possible.

The archivist at the DeKalb History Center said nothing in their records indicates that anyone grew tea in DeKalb.
