Popular evergreen shrub. Just can’t remember name. Also appreciate any thoughts regarding it’s demise (as seen in the second photo).

The live plant to the right of the dead one in th first photo looks like a gardenia. They can suffer and decline from many problems in the West Georgia area. The live shrub in the second picture looks like the growth habit of a box leaf holly and often their decline is due to root rot. Did you notice sections of the shrub slowly dying or did the decline occur rapidly in one season?

Without the benefit of close up photos, I’ll venture a guess that this is a Compacta Holly (Ilex crenata ‘Compacta’)The cause of its demise is even more difficult to discern, but it appears that the left side of the plant in the ‘after’ photo has been lopped off for some reason. In a way it looks as if it has been traumatized or transplanted. Perhaps with a bit more information we could speculate in the right direction.

Thanks Guys. The section (in the first photo) that appears to be lopped off was indeed lopped after that section suddenly died. The shrub was originally planted about 8 years earlier and had thrived until the time of its demise. It started its decline around the first of the summer and by that fall it was completely dead.

So far, its been identified as a Box Leaf Holly and a Compacta Holly. Any consensus or are these two basically the same? Thanks!
